Dr MURRAY LITTLEJOHN

Passed Away 12 October 2024.

 

Loving husband of Patsy, father of Andrew and Tim, grandfather of Abigail, April, Hannah, Owen and Archie.

 

Brother of Robyn and Cathie.

 

He was an esteemed scientist, a trailblazer in the field of anuran bioacoustic research in Australia, and a master frog hunter.

 

A Memorial service will be held to honour the life and work of Dr. Murray Littlejohn, in particular his contribution to the field of anuran bioacoustics research in Australia and globally.

The memorial will be held at Leonda By The Yarra, 2 Wallen Rd, Hawthorn on Wednesday 30th October 2024, commencing at 2.30pm. Following the service, the family invite you to remain for light refreshments.

I too regret that I cannot come to the memorial. Murray was a treasued collegue. He was loved and admired. His influence was broad. For me, it begain before I knew him, my honours supervisor was one of his students. As a graduate student, I found him generous in time and conversation. As a staff member, I enjoyed time I spent with Murray. Generally, though I was the 'expert' he generally knew more than me on any technical computer issue; especially with respect to digitisation. I loved him for how he could not help but laugh at his own jokes. Try as he might to suppress it. I love him for his unrequited passion for Vanilla Slices. I hope …

Jane Doolan and I, Ralph Mac Nally, sadly cannot attend owing to being on an overseas trip. Murray was one of the most delightful persons one could hope to meet, a great perfectionist scientist, an inspiring supervisor and mentor, and a gentleman in every sense. Murray was Ralph’s PhD supervisor and Murray had no hesitation in supporting Ralph pursuing a rearch program that was outside Murray’s usual focus, but Murray’s encouragement was endless and generously given. Murray, Jane and Ralph spent many a frigid winter night near Wallan (when it was countryside) gathering diverse amphibian data to contribute to Ralph’s PhD program. Cold but convivial nights.
